Ronaldo’s Big Ego Made Him The Greatest Scorer Ever

Cristiano Ronaldo announced his international retirement on Thursday. His massive ego and unique personality built a legacy that no one else can match.

The clock is ticking for Julian Hall. The 18-year-old Red Bulls star has a clear path to lock in his future with the USMNT, but it comes with a catch. If Hall steps onto the pitch for the United States in the upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches against Haiti, he will be permanently tied to the American side under FIFA rules. This means no going back to Poland, his other eligible nation through his mother’s heritage.

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes the young talent is ready. He told reporters Wednesday that Hall “fully deserves” the call-up after his performances in the previous window. He added that he did not hear Hall’s earlier comments about Poland, but that when Hall was with the team he “was really excited to play for us, for USA. That’s what is important.” The coach emphasized that commitment and performance matter more than past statements.

The Rules of the Tie

FIFA rules make the distinction clear for players under 21. An appearance in any official competition permanently ties a player to that national team, while friendlies alone do not. Hall has four senior caps so far, all in friendlies, so he is not yet locked in. The upcoming matches against Haiti count as official competition under CONCACAF and FIFA.

Miami hosts the first match on Nov. 14, while the second occurs in Cincinnati on Nov. 17. If Hall plays in either of these, the door to Poland slams shut. He would need to file a one-time switch request, which is only possible if he hasn’t played in an official senior game yet. The window to change his mind is closing fast.

A Talent Worth the Risk

Pochettino is not taking chances with his roster. He brought in a wave of teenagers to test them in friendlies earlier this year, and the results were loud. During the international break spanning September and October, Hall netted three goals and recorded one assist. He earned his first senior call-up then and proved he could handle the pace.

The coach sees this as a chance to blend youth with experience. Wednesday, during a video conference with reporters, Pochettino said “It’s a great opportunity,” “to mix younger [players] with experienced players.” The mix includes veterans like Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun, who are back after missing the friendly run. Hall fits right in with that new energy.

Poland Still in the Mix?

Back in September, Hall did not rule out the Polish national team. He told the New York Post that his international future was “definitely not solidified for me” before his first USMNT camp. He was clear about his feelings then. “I appreciate the opportunity, and I’m going to do as much as I can to make an impact, but I’m definitely still open to my Polish side,” he said.

He added that he cherishes that side because his mom is from there. But the coach says actions matter more than past words. “That’s what counts. In the end, what’s most important is how he performs, acts, and his commitment,” Pochettino said. The commitment is now being tested in real time.

If Hall plays against Haiti, he chooses the USMNT forever. If he sits out, the choice remains open for now. The next two weeks will define his career path.
