LSU fans can finally stop worrying about the ghosts of seasons past. After being bullied by mobile quarterbacks for two straight years, the Tigers’ defense actually showed up. They didn’t just win; they crushed Texas A&M 35-6 on Saturday night. It was the kind of clinical performance that makes you believe the rebuilding process is actually working.

The end of the Marcel Reed era

For two years, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has been a nightmare in Baton Rouge. He led the Aggies to a win in 2024 and dominated the Tigers last season. But that era ended Saturday. The LSU defense put massive pressure on him all night.

According to ESPN, Reed struggled significantly, finishing with only 10-of-26 passing for 106 yards. He also took four sacks and finished with negative 13 yards on 10 carries. That is how you neutralize a threat. You don’t just play well; you take away his ability to move.

Blake Baker’s defensive masterclass

Some people doubted defensive coordinator Blake Baker after recent struggles against running quarterbacks. They weren’t wrong to be skeptical. But this game was clearly a specific goal for the coaching staff. Lane Kiffin said the team spent the entire offseason preparing for this exact matchup.

Kiffin noted, “LSU played great defense vs. passing teams and then running quarterbacks would give him some problems. So I though Blake did a really good job.” It is easy to talk about game plans in a press room, but it is much harder to execute them against a high-level opponent. Kiffin even added, “That’s what good coaches do,” when discussing the preparation.

Cleaning up the mess

The Tigers’ defense didn’t just stop the run; they dominated the scoreboard. The Aggies finished the night with only 197 total yards compared to LSU’s 506. It was a complete mismatch. Even the fans felt the shift in momentum. Kiffin mentioned that Aggies fans were largely gone by the end of the game.

He said, “Their fans certainly didn’t take over areas today. I actually saw all their fans gone at the end, so it was good payback. Happy for our fans.” This win feels like a necessary correction for a program that has been too focused on past failures.
